Here's How The Dusty Dash Works

Here's How The Dusty Dash Works

What Is It?

What Is It?

The Dusty Dash is a two-week, self-drive overland challenge across Southern Africa.

  • Teams are given a small but legendary Citi Golf

  • You start in Cape Town

  • You drive thousands of kilometres north

  • Through deserts, borders, backroads, and towns tourists never see

  • You finish at Lake Malawi

It’s not a race.

It’s not a guided tour.

It’s a shared challenge.

Who This Is For

Who This Is For

The Dusty Dash is for curious, independent travellers who want to experience Southern Africa in a hands-on, slightly chaotic way.

You don’t need to be a hardcore adventurer, a mechanic, or an expert driver.

What matters is attitude: being comfortable with uncertainty, adapting when plans change, and laughing when things don’t go perfectly.

It’s a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy road trips and long days behind the wheel

  • Like solving small problems as they come up

  • Are happy with simple accommodation and dusty conditions

  • Want to travel alongside other teams without being guided every step of the way

WHO IT’S NOT FOR

The Dusty Dash isn’t a luxury holiday or a fully guided tour.

If you’re looking for guaranteed comfort, fixed daily itineraries, or someone to step in the moment something goes wrong, this probably isn’t the right adventure, and that’s okay.

The Route

The Route

Each edition of The Dusty Dash runs between Cape Town and Lake Malawi, covering roughly 5,000 km in two weeks.

One end gives you Table Mountain in the rear-view mirror, a launch party, and a convoy of Citi Golfs pointed north.

You end at Lake Malawi, with cold beers, turquoise water, and a beach party that feels very well earned.

IN BETWEEN

  • Four countries of unfiltered overland driving

  • Tar, gravel, open highways, and mountain passes

  • Border towns, villages, and long empty stretches of road

  • A mix of long mileage days and shorter, more social ones

THE ONE FIXED POINT

There is only one mandatory stop on the entire route: Victoria Falls.

Midway through the rally, every team regroups for a recovery day and a proper party on the edge of one of the world’s biggest waterfalls.

HOW THE ROUTE WORKS

The route is not fixed turn-by-turn.

Teams are given suggested checkpoints, but how you get there is up to you. Detours happen. Roads change. Weather interferes. That uncertainty is the challenge.

What A Typical Day Looks Like

What A Typical Day Looks Like

There’s no fixed daily schedule, but most days follow a familiar rhythm.

Mornings usually start early. You pack the car, grab coffee wherever you can find it, check the map, and point yourself in roughly the right direction. Some teams leave at sunrise. Others leave later and make it work.

Days are spent driving — sometimes long, sometimes surprisingly short. You’ll move between tar and gravel, stop for fuel and food in small towns, miss a turn, argue about directions, and watch the landscape slowly change.

You’ll pass other teams on the road, leapfrog each other at fuel stops, or link up for a few hours when it suits you.

Not every day is about covering maximum distance. The route is designed to leave room for detours, stops, and small decisions — and how you balance driving versus exploring is part of the challenge.

Evenings are when teams filter into the same towns, campsites, or lodges. Dust gets rinsed off, cold drinks appear, and the day’s stories start getting better with every retelling.

The Citi Golf

The Citi Golf

Every team drives the same car: a Volkswagen Citi Golf.

It’s a late-90s South African icon, simple, lightweight, and refreshingly analogue. No screens, no driver aids, no distractions. Just a 1.4-litre fuel-injected engine and a basic manual gearbox.

Despite its size, the Citi Golf is well suited to long-distance driving when treated with a bit of mechanical sympathy. It sits comfortably at highway speeds, handles rougher roads better than you might expect, and is common enough that parts and knowledge exist almost everywhere.

Each car is prepared and checked before the event to make sure it’s fit for the route. Before departure, teams are briefed on what’s normal, what isn’t, and how to look after the car over long days on the road.

You don’t need to be a mechanic, just basic care, common sense, and a willingness to listen when the car tells you something’s wrong.

Small doesn’t mean fragile. The Citi Golf is more than capable of long highway stretches and rougher backroads alike. It sits comfortably at speed, handles gravel better than you might expect, and is common across Southern Africa, which means parts, mechanics, and know-how are never far away.

THE VEHICLE DEPOSIT

A refundable £1,000 vehicle deposit is required per team, due around one month before launch.

Normal Dusty Dash-grade wear and tear is expected and not penalised.

We’d rather not take a deposit at all, but it’s a practical necessity. We keep it simple and fair.

Safety & Support

Safety & Support

Participation is at your own risk. Teams are responsible for their own decisions throughout the rally.

That said, the event is structured to reduce avoidable risk and keep teams connected.

What We Provide

  • Vehicle tracking for safety awareness

  • A list of trusted local mechanics and recovery contacts

  • Clear escalation guidance for serious incidents

  • A mandatory midway regroup at Victoria Falls

Vehicle tracking allows organisers to see where cars are and flag potential issues. It is not an emergency response or rescue service.

What We Don’t Provide

  • A chase or support vehicle

  • Mechanical assistance on demand

  • Medical staff or emergency rescue services

  • Guided driving or supervision

Teams Must

  • Not drive at night

  • Drive responsibly and within local laws

  • Make sensible decisions based on road and weather conditions

  • Arrange appropriate travel, medical, and evacuation insurance

  • Contact local emergency services directly if required

This is a semi-managed challenge, not a fully supported expedition.
